Argentina World Cup 2026 Squad — Scaloni Drops Acuña

16 days to kickoff. Lionel Scaloni named Argentina's 26-man World Cup 2026 squad via an AFA institutional video on Thursday May 28, three days ahead of the FIFA deadline. The split is 3-8-7-8 — three goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders, eight forwards, the heaviest back-line allocation of Scaloni's tenure. Marcos Acuña is the headline omission: only 11 league appearances and 838 minutes for River Plate this season tipped the call, with Facundo Medina of Marseille taking the senior left-back depth. Franco Mastantuono is the surprise snub despite a debut Real Madrid season that produced his first LaLiga goal at Levante and a Champions League goal in the 6-1 win over Monaco. Emiliano Buendía is out three weeks after lifting the Europa League with Aston Villa. Six Atlético Madrid players make the 26 — no other club has more than three — including Álvarez, Molina, Musso, González, Almada and Giuliano Simeone. Messi clears a hamstring concern and travels as captain for a record sixth World Cup, with 116 international goals and 61 assists in 198 senior caps. Eight players will be at their first World Cup. Group J opens against Algeria on Tuesday June 16 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, with Austria in Miami on June 21 and Jordan in Atlanta on June 26. Full story: the Acuña fitness call, why Mastantuono lost out, the Atlético cluster, the projected XI vs Algeria and the realistic title-defence ceiling.

Neymar ruled out of opener; Morocco squad out; UCL Final tomorrow in Budapest
1
Neymar Out of Brazil's June 13 Opener. CBF team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed on May 28 that Neymar has sustained a grade-two right calf strain playing for Santos against Coritiba. The 34-year-old forward faces two to three more weeks on the sidelines, ruling him out of Brazil's warm-up friendlies against Panama and Egypt and making him all but certain to miss Brazil's Group C opener against Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey. Santos initially described the problem as minor oedema; CBF's independent assessment revealed a more serious partial muscle-fibre tear. (Al Jazeera / beIN Sports / Goal, May 28)

Egypt, Canada File Today; Morocco Named. Egypt and Canada are both expected to submit their final 26-man rosters to FIFA today, May 29, as the June 1 submission deadline looms. Mohamed Salah will captain Egypt; Omar Marmoush provides the second forward option. Morocco, who face Brazil on June 13, unveiled their squad on May 26: PSG's Achraf Hakimi and Real Madrid's Brahim Díaz headline the Atlas Lions, while 2022 hero Youssef En-Nesyri and Hakim Ziyech were both omitted. (Al Jazeera / ESPN, May 21–26)
