Norway 1-2 England: Bellingham Brace Seals Semis

Jude Bellingham has spent this tournament saving England when they need it, and he did it again in Miami. He equalised before half-time and then won it three minutes into extra time, a brace that sent Thomas Tuchel’s side past Norway 2-1 in a tight, bad-tempered quarter-final at a sweltering Hard Rock Stadium and into the last four.

What happened in Norway 1-2 England?

For long spells Norway were the better side. Andreas Schjelderup put them ahead on 36 minutes, cutting inside and beating Jordan Pickford with a fierce left-footed strike he could not keep out. How did Bellingham win it in extra time?

With the reaction he has shown all tournament. Three minutes into extra time, Morgan Rogers hit a shot from distance that Norway keeper Ørjan Nyland could only push out, and Bellingham got there first to prod in the rebound. It was his sixth goal of the finals, and England’s No. 10 had once again decided a game that was slipping away from them.

We had seen it before, in the win over Croatia. England have not played well at these finals, but they keep getting through, and more and more it is one player dragging them there.

Why couldn’t Haaland decide it for Norway?

The small calls went against him. Haaland got a header away on 35 minutes but Pickford held it, and Norway thought they had a second-half lead until Heggem’s finish was ruled out for a foul by Haaland in the build-up. That was Norway’s night in a nutshell: brave and dangerous, undone by fine margins.

From the shock win over Brazil in the group stage onward, Haaland’s Norway have been one of the stories of the tournament. Losing a quarter-final in extra time, to a Bellingham moment, is nothing to be ashamed of. They arrived earlier than anyone expected and leave with their stock higher than when they came.

What does this say about England?

They are winning without playing anywhere near their best, which is either a warning to the rest or a worry for their own fans, depending on your mood. There has been none of the swagger people wanted, but four knockout wins is four knockout wins, and nobody left in the draw has a match-winner like Bellingham right now. For a squad that came in with plenty of doubts, that stubbornness is starting to look like a strength.
