What is the World Cup 2026 Round of 16?
The Round of 16 is the second knockout round of the 2026 World Cup and the round that survived the format change. From France 1998 through Qatar 2022, the Round of 16 was the first knockout round — fed by 16 teams advancing directly from the group stage. At the 2026 World Cup, the Round of 16 follows the new Round of 32 and is fed by the 16 Round of 32 winners.
The round runs across four days from July 4 to July 7, 2026, with two matches per day. Each match is a single 90-minute leg; if level, 30 minutes of extra time, then a penalty shoot-out if still level. The 8 winners advance to the Quarter-finals.
How does the Round of 16 bracket work at World Cup 2026?
The 8 Round of 16 fixtures are fixed by the bracket — no redraw. Each Round of 32 winner has a pre-determined Round of 16 opponent based on the bracket slot it occupied. The bracket is split into two halves of 8 teams each:
- Top half: 4 Round of 16 matches → 4 quarter-finalists → 2 semi-finalists → 1 finalist
- Bottom half: 4 Round of 16 matches → 4 quarter-finalists → 2 semi-finalists → 1 finalist
The two finalists from each half meet in the final. This bracket structure ensures that two teams from the same group cannot meet again until the semi-finals at earliest — they're placed in opposite quarters of the bracket.

When are the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 matches?
The Round of 16 runs across four match days from July 4 to July 7, 2026:
- Saturday July 4: 2 matches (top-half R16 fixtures 1–2)
- Sunday July 5: 2 matches (top-half R16 fixtures 3–4)
- Monday July 6: 2 matches (bottom-half R16 fixtures 1–2)
- Tuesday July 7: 2 matches (bottom-half R16 fixtures 3–4)
The 8 winners advance to the Quarter-finals beginning Friday July 10.
How is the Round of 16 different at the 48-team World Cup?
The Round of 16 itself is structurally the same as previous World Cups — 8 single-leg matches, bracket fixed in advance, extra time and penalties for tied matches. What changed at 2026 is what feeds it. From 1998 to 2022, the Round of 16 was the first knockout round, fed directly by 16 group-stage advancers (top 2 of each of 8 groups). At 2026, the field expanded to 48 teams with 12 groups, and the Round of 16 is now fed by the 16 winners of the Round of 32, which itself is fed by 24 group winners and runners-up plus 8 best-third teams.
One practical consequence: the strongest teams now play one more knockout match before the quarter-finals than they did in the 32-team era. Tournament-winning teams now need seven knockout wins (R32 + R16 + QF + SF + Final ... wait, that's 5) — well, R32 + R16 + QF + SF + Final = 5 wins. Actually identical to the 32-team era's 4 knockout matches plus the new R32 match makes it 5. Since groups still award only 3 matches each, a 2026 winning team plays 8 matches total (3 group + 5 knockout) versus the 7 a Qatar 2022 winner played.
