Mexico

FIFA #17. Three matches at home: Mexico City twice and Guadalajara once. No travel beyond the country.

Javier Aguirre returned in 2024 for a third stint as head coach. Rafael Márquez is his assistant and the succession line is already clear beyond this cycle.

Mexico's wider story is still transition. The squad has enough home knowledge and crowd advantage to control the group, but several positions remain part of a generational handoff in late April.

Mexico City sits at 2,240 metres. Guadalajara is around 1,500. Both push visiting squads into acclimatisation windows they rarely get in a group stage compressed into 13 days.

Korea Republic

Korea Republic arrived unbeaten through the decisive phase of AFC qualifying. Hong Myung-bo returned for a second stint as head coach in July 2024 and this squad has a clear spine.

Son Heung-min remains the central attacking reference. He joined LAFC in 2025 after leaving Tottenham. Lee Kang-in at Paris Saint-Germain and Kim Min-jae at Bayern Munich form the rest of the core.

The June 18 match against Mexico is the group's defining fixture. A draw or better in Guadalajara puts second place firmly in reach.

Czechia

Czechia are back at a World Cup for the first time since 2006, having missed 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

The qualification route was built more on shape and set pieces than attacking volume. The June 18 match against South Africa in Atlanta is their clearest three-point opportunity. The June 24 closer at Mexico City Stadium is likely decided by the time it kicks off — either Mexico are already through and rotating, or Czechia need a result that neither altitude nor crowd will make comfortable.

South Africa

Bafana Bafana return for their first World Cup since 2010. That year they opened the tournament at home against Mexico and drew 1-1. Sixteen years later, the same fixture opens another World Cup.

South Africa were FIFA #60 in the April 2026 ranking. The defensive block is organised and the counter is still the cleanest route to a result. A draw in the opener would shape the mood of the tournament's first week.

The Decisive Fixtures

• June 11 opener. Mexico's crowd, the 2010 callback and the opening-match ceremony put unusual pressure on the first 90 minutes of the tournament.
• June 18 Mexico vs Korea Republic. Both sides can put a Round of 32 path in their own hands with a win. This is the group's most likely defining result.
• June 18 Czechia vs South Africa. Whoever wins keeps the Round of 32 door open, even if third place becomes the route.

Mexico should top the group on home schedule alone. Korea Republic's talent edge over Czechia and South Africa makes them the likeliest second-place team. The third-place line probably comes down to the June 18 match in Atlanta.
